The History
Prometheus is the name of one of the original Greek gods – a Titan – from the ancient mythology recorded in Hesiod’s 8th Century B.C. masterwork, Theogeny. The story is one of Divine Justice. As a Titan, Prometheus was one of the original creations borne out of the divine elements of the infinite. The Titans spawned the gods, and Zeus was the king of these gods. While Zeus reigned supreme over Human-kind, he remained cautious, if not jealous, of the power of the Titans. To prove his might, Zeus took away the gift of Fire from the People. Without Fire, the People were cast into misery and famine, and injustice bore down upon them all. Outraged by such a foul act, Prometheus climbed the great heights of Mount Olympus, upon which lived Zeus and the other gods, and with intellect, grace, and speed, Prometheus stole back the Fire and hid its elegant flame inside the hollow of a fennel stalk. Prometheus brought the Fire back to the People, restoring the light of life – Justice and Hope. For his noble act of heroism, Prometheus was punished by the gods, who chained him to a mountain and set an eagle upon him to eat his liver. Soon, the great hero Hercules shot that eagle with an arrow and broke Prometheus free from his chains. Thus our hero Prometheus was free and continued to serve as a powerful reminder to the whimsical gods to obey the dictates of Justice, lest Prometheus arise again to right their wrongs and stand up for humanity.
